A group of hackers targetting high profile public figures in India has revealed that its recent cyber attacks are merely a 'taster' for what's to come.

In the past two weeks hackers calling themselves Legion have taken over the Twitter accounts of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former liquor boss chairman Vijay Mallya, and NDTV news show hosts Barkha Dutt and Ravish Kumar.

The Washington Post claims it has spoken to the hackers, who said they had access to tens of thousands of servers in India and had raw data about all sorts of 'interests'.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was the first high profile person to have their Twitter account hacked by the group calling itself Legion

Servers are said to include that of Cheap Private Proxy Shop hospital chain Apollo, but the group reportedly said it was hesitant about releasing data from such channels due to the 'chaos' that it might cause.

In screenshots purportedly showing the text conversation between one of the hackers and the Washington Post reporter, the political motives behind the online attacks were vague and messages were littered with references to drugs.

One said: 'Right now, the only objective is to put as much classified information into the public domain as possible.'

Former liquor boss chairman Vijay Mallya was the second victim and links were posted to what Legion alleged were details of his bank accounts, offshore investments and luxury cars

The hackers allegedly warned the next target would be former IPL cricket chief Lalit Modi, but said that the group had it's 'sights set on bigger things' and that individual targets were just an 'appetiser'.

When Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account was hacked on November 30, a series of expletive-ridden messages appeared threatening to leak crucial party communications.

One of the messages read: 'I love looting the common people.'

In their latest attack, the hackers targetted NDTV news show hosts Barkha Dutt (pictured) and Ravish Kumar within hours of each other over the weekend.

Another read: 'My corrupt [expletive] family should burn to shreds.  They turned this [expletive] country upside down in 60 years.'

On Friday Indian businessman Vijay Mallya said that his Twitter account had been penetrated by Legion, which posted links to what it alleged were details of Mallya's bank accounts, offshore investments and luxury cars.

Mallya, a flamboyant former billionaire who made his fortune from a liquor and beer empire, moved to Britain in March after being pursued in courts by banks claiming that his now defunct Kingfisher airline owed around $1.4 billion.

The tweets were swiftly deleted but one posted on the account of Ravish Kumar (pictured) read: 'We do not work for @BJP4India or @PMOIndia.'

'Legion will find you, hack you, expose you,' read one of several postings tweeted by the hackers on Mallya's official Twitter account before they were erased.

Mallya, who denies absconding, was not immediately available for a comment, and a spokesman for his UB Group also declined immediate comment on the hack.

But a response was tweeted on his verified Twitter account, reading: 'Outfit called Legion has hacked my email accounts and are blackmailing me! What a joke.'

In another tweet from Legion through Mallya's account, the group denied blackmail.

The Enforcement Directorate, a government agency set up to fight financial crime, has accused Mallya's UB Group of using some of the funds lent to Kingfisher Airlines to buy property overseas.

Mallya, who is wanted by law enforcement agencies, has denied wrongdoing, calling the charges against him 'preposterous'.

In these messages, tweeted by the hackers, they warned more data was set to be leaked

He had also offered a settlement to creditors, which they refused to consider.

In their latest attack, the hackers targetted NDTV news show hosts Barkha Dutt and Ravish Kumar within hours of each other over the weekend.

The tweets were swiftly deleted but one posted on Ravish Kumar's account read: 'We do not work for @BJP4India or @PMOIndia.'

These were some of the tweets seen on Ravish Kumar's account after it was hacked, but the messages were swiftly deleted

India has never seen a leak of confidential internal party emails by any hacker.

According to cyber experts, the attempt to hack would be made using proxy server, making it difficult for the security agency to track it.

Police investigations into the hacking incidents are currently underway.
